.

Set Up for the Base Game
1 Shuffle all 72 cards
2 Make a face down draw pile
(
1B
)
3 Every player takes a score card
(
2
)
4 Every player draws one card at a time until all players have three cards in hand, keep them hidden from
the other players
(
1D
)
5 Choose a starting player, turns will be played in clockwise order
First all the players
will
build the Slotmachine on the table
(1A)
Vegas Slot Machine 1973 will be played on a grid of 3x3 cards.
The starting player plays one card from his hand
face up on an open space in the grid and draws a card from the draw pile. The next player will put one of his cards in
the grid adjacent to the previous card (horizontal, vertical or diagonal), and also draws a card. This will continue until
there are nine cards in the 3x3 grid, each new card adjacent to one of the previously played cards. It is possible to
claim prizes in this stage.
Turn Structure
1 First check if you have three of the same symbols in your hand. Claim these cards as a prize, draw back up to
three. Repeat if necessary.
2 Put a card on an available space in the slot machine
3 If you make a row of three of the same symbols on a payline, you claim the prize. Take the cards out of the grid.
4 If this reveals a new set of three symbols on a payline, you can also claim the newly revealed prize.
5 If the grid has any empty spots, fi ll them with cards from the draw pile
6 If this also makes a new set of three symbols, you may claim this prize as well.
7 Draw a card
8 End of turn
Playing a card
When it’s your turn, you must play a card from your hand on top of one of the nine cards in the grid. Multiple cards
on top of each other will form a stack, only the top card will be visible and it is not allowed to look at the other cards
in the stack.
Claiming a prize
The player tries to make a prize in the grid, by playing a card from his hand and mak
ing a
row of three matching
symbols (cherries, lemons etc.) on a payline. You are allowed to make more prizes with only one card if you match
different paylines.
Take the cards you claimed out of the grid and put them in front of you. If you already claimed a prize on a previous
turn, or claimed multiple prizes in one turn, keep your prizes
separate
from each other. Usually this means you will
have multiple stacks of three cards in front of you.
If you, for example, claimed two prizes with one card in the grid by making three lemons horizontal and three
vertical, take all fi ve cards and make a stack of two cards and a stack of three cards in front of you.
If claiming a prize results in empty spaces in the grid, you must fi ll those empty spaces with cards from the draw pile.
Left to right, top to
bottom. When you remove
and/or replace
the cards from the grid, and you uncover another prize,
take those cards as well. This will continue untill you can’t claim any more prizes.

Paylines
You can claim a prize when all three of the matching symbols are on the same payline, except for shields.
There are nine different paylines: two diagonal, three horizontal, three vertical and the one in your hand.
Tactical card play
Even if you can’t make a prize, you still must play one of your cards on top of one of the other cards in the grid.
Keep in mind what other players have played, or what cards are still in your hand.
You can’t just play any card anywhere in the grid, there are some exceptions
:
Card placement rules
-You may n
ot
play a symbol card on top of the same symbol already in the grid.
-You can’t play a symbol card on top of another card if that card
i
s already part of a set of two of the same symbols
on a payline
-You can’t play a symbol card on top of a shield, if there are already two shields in the grid
-You may never play a symbol card on top of the ANY symbol.
Exceptions
-You can play your card everywhere if it allows you to make a prize, however it is not mandatory to make a prize.
-If there are only sets of two of the same symbols on all the paylines, you
may
play on top of one of those cards
.
T
his will overrule the previous rule about covering up cards that are already part of a set of two.
-If there are only sets of two of the same symbols on all the paylines, except for one symbol which happens to be
the same symbol as the one in your hand, you may play on top of it. This overrules the previous rule of not
playing a symbol card on top of the same symbol.
ANY Symbol
The ANY symbol is a wild symbol and can be used as any of the symbols to make a prize.
The ANY symbol does not count when determining if there are already sets of two in the grid for card placement
rules.
Shield Symbol
Three Shields anywhere in the grid can be claimed as a prize, they do not have to be on the same payline.
End of turn
Take one card from the draw pile,
this way
you will always have three cards in hand.
End of game
When the draw pile is empty, this will signal the end of the game. Play will continue with players playing a card from
their hand and trying to make prizes.
You will skip the end of turn draw in this phase and empty spaces in the grid
will stay empty.
You may lay a card on an
empty space
.
After the last card is played, you will score your prizes.
If you
play multiple rounds, set up a new game and change the starting player in clockwise order.
Scoring
You score points for every set of prizes you claimed. Look at the score card to see how much points every set of
symbols is worth. Write your score on the back of the score card with a dry erase pen.
After three games, add up all
the points. The player with the most points is the winner of Vegas Slot Machine 1973! In case of a tie, both players
win.
Solo and
coöperative

Play and set up is the same as in
competitive
play mode, but in this case you will try to get the highest score
possible by playing alone or working together. What will your high score be?

Expansions
Spin Again
Variation A
: At the beginning of the game, all players will put the Spin Again card in front of
them. This card does not count towards your hand
limit
of three cards.
At the end
your
turn,
but before you draw a card from the draw pile, you may play your Spin Again card to take
another turn. Discard after use.
Variation B
: Shuffle all the Spin Again cards with all the cards in the main deck. If you draw
one
of
these cards
,
keep
it
in your hand. It will count towards your hand
limit
of three cards.
At the end of your turn,
after you draw a card, you may play a Spin Again card to take another turn. Discard
after
use.
Three Spin Again
cards as a prize will give you 100 points.
Cumber
Variation A:
Shuffle the Cumber cards with all the cards in the main deck. Three Cumber
cards on a payline will score you 200 points.
Variation B:
Shuffle the Cumber cards with all the cards in the main deck. Play a Cumber
card from your hand to take one of the following actions:
-Move one symbol card in the grid to a different spot, but keep in mind the card placement
rules.
-You may secretly
look
through all the stacks in the slot machine.
-You may put the last played symbol card on the bottom of the draw pile, you can take this action on another players
turn, but not if that player
has made
a prize.
-Draw three cards from the draw pile, keep three
(of your total fi ve)
cards and put the rest on the bottom of the draw
pile.
-Special! Check the website ( http://vsm1973.com/effect-of-the-month.html ) for the rules, they will depend on the
month you are playing.
Multiple Cumber cards can be played by multiple players in the same turn. After playing a Cumber card, draw a
new
card from the deck.
If a Cumber card is played in the grid when you are fi lling the empty spots in the slot machine,
the player whose turn it is can take the Cumber card from the grid. Keep in mind your hand limit of three. Three
Cumbers on a payline is 200 points.
Variations
After playing a couple of times with the basic rules, you can try to add one or more of the following variations to
spice up your game!
A. You
can
play a card on another card that is already part of
a
set of two on the same payline.
B. The ANY symbol counts as part of a set of two of the same symbols on the same payline
C. When playing with 4, 6 or 8 players, make 2, 3 or 4 teams. (when playing with more
than
four players, use two
decks or variation Q)
D. Make two slot machines on the table
E. Play as many rounds as there are players, every player will be the start player once.
F. You cannot play a card on top of the card that was just played by the previous player
G. Stacks in the slot machine cannot contain more then fi ve cards
H. You can’t claim a prize you have in your hand. In other words your hand is
not
a payline, only the
playlines in the slot machine will count for claiming prizes.
I. Your hand size is
four
cards
J. When building the slot machine, you will make a four by three grid.
K. At the beginning of a new round all players will discard a card from their hand without looking.
L. For every player in the game take one card from the draw pile and place them open next to the deck. When
drawing a card at the end of your turn, you may choose to take one of the open cards or draw one from the top of
the draw pile. If you have taken an open card draw another card to put next to the deck.
M. Put your cards in hand face down on the table, you may look at them once. Play from memory.
N. After playing a card, at the end of your turn, discard another card from your hand to the discard pile. Draw two
cards at the end of your turn.
O. You do not have to draw a card at the end of your turn. The game ends immediately when the draw pile is empty.
Cards still in your hand will give you negative points based on their prize scoring. So one cherry in hand at the end
of the game will give you -8 points.

P. When building the slot machine, do not claim prizes, but cover them up with cards from the draw pile until there
are no more prizes in the grid.
Q. More
than
four players but only one deck? When claiming a prize, instead of keeping all the cards only take one.
The rest will go to the discard pile. When the draw pile is empty, reshuffle the discard pile en keep playing. The
game ends when there are no more cards in the draw pile or discard pile.
R. If you have two sets of the same symbols at the end of the game claimed as prizes, you will score an extra bonus
set. For example: two sets of lemons will score you 36 points instead of 24.
S. The fi rst round will be played counter clockwise, the last player will have two turns in a row, then continue to play
in clockwise order.
T. At the beginning of a new round, the fi rst player will get three cards, the second player four, the third fi ve, etc.
U. Solo and
coöperative
variation. Set a timer and try to beat your time and score. 700 points in 5 minutes is
extremely hard, 600 points in 20 minutes is doable. Try to get as close to 700 points in 5 minutes.
